Ensuring Compliance with Federal Air Quality Standards
Background: The Regional Air Quality Council (RAQC) is tasked with helping to develop state implementation plans (SIPs) for the Denver area to comply with federal air quality standards. The National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) include standards for six criteria pollutants. These pollutants are: carbon monoxide (CO), lead, particulate matter, ground-level ozone, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. When the seven-county Denver metropolitan region fails to meet any of the NAAQS standards, the RAQC and its partners pull together in a series of stakeholder meetings to determine what measures will be included in the SIP for the pollutant.
The Regional Air Quality Council has created a document, The SIP Planning Process and Colorado SIP Summaries, to provide an overview of the Clean Air Act's (CAA) Requirements for state implementation plan development and approval for the Denver Metro Area (DMA), as well as a historical summary of the Colorado SIPs by pollutant. To view full versions of the SIPs, visit the DOCUMENTS page and select State Implementation Plans.
