Gas-powered lawn mowers, leaf blowers, string trimmers, and the like are the Front Range’s third largest source of ground-level ozone causing pollutants. As part of its mission to improve Coloradans’ air quality, the Regional Air Quality Council’s Mow Down Pollution program is teaming up with Adams County and the cities of Westminster, Commerce City, Thornton, Northglenn, and Brighton to host an event for their residents to trade in their old gas-powered mower and receive a voucher to help purchase a new, clean electric alternative.

While lawn mowers have small engines, they lack major emissions control devices and have an oversized impact on our air quality. One hour of running a gas-powered mower creates as much pollution as driving a car 300 miles: about the distance from Commerce City to the Utah border.

The event, open to residents of Westminster, Commerce City, Northglenn, Brighton, or unincorporated Adams County, includes a $200 voucher for verified residents who turn in their gas mower to be recycled. A separate, state-funded 30% point of sale discount, and manufacturers’ discounts can also be stacked onto the savings. These programs combined reduce the cost of a $449.99 mower to only $79.99. A variety of brands and models will be available for purchase.

“Replacing gas-powered mowers with electric alternatives is one of the low-hanging fruit for solving the Front Range’s air quality problems,” said Jacob LaBure, Program Manager for the RAQC. “This is an action that everyone who owns a mower can take to help reduce air pollution.”

Residents are reminded they must bring in a gas-powered mower to recycle and proof of residency (such as a photo ID with current address or piece of mail and other photo ID) to receive the $200 voucher, but the other discounts are available to everyone. Limited vouchers are available and will be first come, first served.
