High Occupancy Vehicle
Updated: September 3, 2024A high occupancy vehicle refers to a motor vehicle carrying a required minimum number of passengers–normally two. If you see a sign that says HOV 3+ that would mean the vehicle must be holding a minimum of three passengers. There are HOV lanes on some heavily trafficked roads and often there are less cars traveling in those lanes due to a lack of carpooling. So, one of the main purposes of these lanes is to restrict traffic to those that are carpooling.
