Ammonia Gas. Ammonia is most commonly emitted from agricultural activities, landfill sites, sewage facilities and composting of organic materials. Health effects from high levels of exposure to ammonia can cause irritation of the throat, lungs and eyes.  Ammonia is a colorless gas with a pungent odor, composed of nitrogen and hydrogen.  Ammonia changes to Ammonium in the atmosphere (cation form (NH4+)) and then combines easily with SO2 and/or NOx to form particulate sulfate and nitrate.
