This Earth Day, the Regional Air Quality Council is showcasing food trucks that are going green by ditching their old dirty generators and switching to a new, clean electric system.

Air pollution from mobile businesses may be a fleeting thought or concern for customers waiting in line. However, a single food truck running for 8 hours with a gas generator can emit 165 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2). That’s the equivalent of burning 83 pounds of coal, according to the EPA. Those emissions contribute to the Front Range’s air quality problems and are a health risk for both workers and customers. Fortunately, modern mobile battery technology is now readily available.

In 2024, the RAQC launched “Engines Off,” a new grant program that offers food trucks (and similar mobile businesses) 80% of the cost, up to $20,000, to transition from a fossil fuel generator to an electric power system.

Here’s what a few food truck owners are saying about their new systems:

  • “It’s incredibly empowering to know that I have the self-sustained power I need to get through my shift (or two!), be silent, not emit any noxious fumes, not be NOISY NOISY NOISY, and that it has completely changed how my business is run and operates and I couldn’t be happier.” – Alex Maloof, owner of Café Alejandro
  • “The system is AWESOME. I couldn’t believe it until I saw it running and man it is GREAT.” – Jorge Dominguez, owner of Arepas House
  • “It’s quiet, cheaper, and fits the mission of being eco-friendly and sustainable.” – Hallie Dantzler, owner of Hal’s Coffee

This Earth Day, other food truck owners and the public are invited to enjoy lunches provided by converted trucks and learn more about how to convert generator powered food trucks to electric.

Food Trucks and the public are asked to RSVP online at RSVP – 4/22 Event | Engines Off. RSVPs are not required, but help participating businesses and organizations.

Several food trucks are offering limited free meals for attendees, thanks to generous support from Ace Hardware, RV Solar Connections, PACE, and Joule Case.
